South African midfielder Steven Pienaar is out of contract at English Premier League side Everton and has made his intentions of returning to play in his home country clear.

Since being released from his Merseyside club, the 34-year-old has been at the centre of interest from numerous clubs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Having spent time playing throughout Europe, the experienced midfielder counts Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton amongst his former clubs, displaying his pedigree.

Pretoria-based club Mamelodi Sundowns have emerged in local reports as the favourites to bring the free agent back to South Africa, but Pienaar has denied having any contact with the current PSL champions.

‘No, no-one has made contact with me yet,’ Pienaar told Kickoff when asked about Sundowns. ‘As mentioned before, I want to enjoy my break the best way possible and I will let my manager handle all that stuff.’

The player admitted that a move to China may also be a possibility, as he was contacted by a Chinese club in February.

The 34-year-old struggled with injury in his last few seasons at Everton, making only six appearances for the Toffees in the 2015/16 campaign.
