Once again young, black, heavenly bodies descended upon Brooklyn for the Afropunk Fest. This year was larger than ever, with performances by Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz and the one-and-only Grace Jones. If there was ever a question whether black lives mattered, it was answered with a resounding shout and dance that you couldn’t ignore.
There was protesting, mosh pits and some attendees who begged the question ‘What are you on?’ Forget the pretty Afros – here’s our take on the festival. And one thing’s for sure… there’s no punk missing in Afropunk.
There were mutual feels across the festival. Grace Jones went all out. She was wearing a lot of white paint and not a lot of clothes. The other ladies at the festival represented; you can’t get more punk than a fro’hawk and a nose ring.
