Call, response and turn up. That was the theme of MHD’s set at the Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre. Not speaking a word of French could not prevent us from being swept up by a crowd, who’d been warmed up by South London rap crew 67 and knew every word to the 22-year-old rapper’s songs.
The atmosphere was infectious, the performer was playful and full of energy and the crowd was twerking. Fan favourites included Ngatie Abedi and A Kele Nta, but everyone was pretty much on their feet throughout the night. The man even threw in an improvised dance competition and his ‘Champion’s League’ chant – which sparked a roaring response every single time – and the result was a pretty solid London debut by the self-proclaimed king of afro trap.
