Maki Oh has everyone talking when Nigerian contemporary fashion comes up.
Vogue.com exclusively published the first images of Maki Oh’s 2016 ready-to-wear collection a few days ago. Velvet, tie-dye, sheer fabric, oversized sequins and lilac and purple all feature in the 27-strong lookbook. Designer Maki Osakwe has described the collection as an exploration of what it means to be a black woman, saying she can only be ‘proud of who I am’ and celebrate her culture.
The influences from African landscapes are abundant. According to her Insta, the textiles and hues are inspired by ‘the richness of Nigerian landscape—from the lush greens, to the earth tones of Nok terracotta’.
Maki was raised in Lagos but studied in Great Britain before launching her brand in 2010.
