The Sartist portrait series is a celebration of the South African athletes who competed when black sportsmen and women rarely did. During apartheid, and after, sport was often seen as a ‘white man’s’ activity.
These athletes used sport to give black culture an identity which we still use as a reference in South African history today. The Sartist tells their untold story, a testament to South Africa’s athletes of a bygone era.
