The return of Asa to a stage in Lagos was met with as much anticipation as one would expect for a singer who’s known to be one of the most exciting artists to have emerged in the last decade, and is often referred to as ‘Orisha’ or ‘Goddess’.
The night kicked off with six musical acts, including Aramide, Funbi and Omolara, but the show didn’t really start until Asa graced the stage at about 9pm.
Dressed in Maki Oh, accompanied by her band, and the 30-member homegrown Vesta Violins Orchestra, she started with a fan-favorite folksong Awe. The crowd sang along, danced and literally worshipped, as she went on to perform her hit songs from Fire on the mountain, to Jailer, Bibanke, Satan be Gone, and many others.
Asa is, without any doubt, a phenomenal, vibrant, and breathtaking artiste to watch perform. She entertained us not just with music, but with dance. She shared the story of how she got signed after waiting 10 hours in the cold winter of Paris to get a shot at an audition.
Already, fans are calling for a 2018 edition. We’ll be there.
