Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Algeria 3-1 in Uyo, Nigeria to take a commanding position at the top of group B. Gernot Rohr’s men defeated the Fennec Foxes thanks to a brace from resurgent Chelsea winger Victor Moses and one from his club teammate John Obi Mikel. The Victory will be pleasing for the Eagles and their fans alike as it puts them top of the group B with six points, four more than their nearest rivals Cameroon who are on two points.
The defeat for Algeria is a massive dent to their qualification hopes and new team trainer Georges Leekens will know that anything less than victory in their next match away in Zambia in August, 2017 will all but end their chances of qualifying for Russia 2018.
Nigeria took the lead in the first half thanks to a smart finish from Moses after receiving a pass from Mikel. The winger, who is enjoying a rich vein a form at club level added extra gloss to the Eagles’ win, after Nabil Bentaleb had given the visitors slender hope with a 30-yard stunner. The Eagles know that three points from the next game at home to Cameroon will edge them closer to qualification.
