Algeria has maintained the top spot in Africa as far as the FIFA rankings are concerned, with world football’s governing body releasing the August standings on Thursday.

The North Africans have topped the list for the last few months from an African perspective, keeping their place despite pressure from Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Côte d’Ivoire and the Black Stars of Ghana.

In the overall list Algeria is ranked 32nd, while the Ghanaians have now moved up into 35th place, leapfrogging the Ivorians with a one place move up the charts, while the Elephants lost a place to 36th position.

This means that the African podium has now changed, with Ghana second and Côte d’Ivoire third.

The next three spots remain the same as July’s standings, with Senegal fourth, Egypt fifth and Tunisia keeping sixth place.

Morocco and Cameroon have swapped places, with the Atlas Lions moving into 53rd position while the Indomitable Lions fall one down to 54th.

Big gains for Congo DR see them moving up three spots to make 56th place overall their own, while a four position boost for Cape Verde sees the islanders break into the top 10.

Outside of the top 10, South Africa’s Bafana find themselves three places up at 64th overall, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria experienced the same gains, with a global position of 67th.

The next revision of the list will be released on September 15.
