Twitter has been abuzz since word got out that AKA would be releasing a new single on Friday, March 11.
After the record-breaking success of his single with Diamond Platnumz, Make Me Move, anticipation for the release of #OneTime was sky-high and the expectations even higher.
The beat, with its funky 80s-style melodies, invites AKA to share his Michael Jackson-influenced dance moves.
In typical AKA style, there was a bit of a twist to it; the song would not be released for purchase. Instead, it would be debuted via a live performance on South Africa’s biggest music show, Live Amp.

Rocking a black leather jacket with white trimmings and his trademark black shades, AKA stood and delivered a somewhat surprising performance. His voice was transmitted through auto-tune and his notes were more melodic than usual. The beat, with its funky 80s-style melodies, invites AKA to share his Michael Jackson-influenced dance moves, something we’re starting to see more of.
AKA found a winning formula, #OneTime is masterfully done, that "Weekend" 80s Disco sample highlights his deep appreciation of the art.

This is one for the ladies, with its groovy, sensual production underpinning the tale of a woman’s fascination with independence, material possessions and everything in between. It offers a new glimpse into AKAs range as a musician and, judging by this bold new release, he can certainly mix it up.
‘I have a responsibility as the leader of this movement to kind of forge a new path and explore different avenues.’
‘I don’t think it’s necessary for me to make a new trap song, there are so many great artists who have that sound covered,’ AKA explained after his performance. ‘I have a responsibility as the leader of this movement to kind of forge a new path and explore different avenues.’
With his new album slated for release in the coming months, I can’t wait to hear what he has up his sleeve.
