Lalibela, a small farming town in northern Ethiopia is known for its magnificent rock-hewn churches that date back to the 13th century. Just over 40 per cent of Ethiopians are Orthodox Christian.
It is considered a holy land, with thousands going on pilgrimage there to observe the orthodox holiday of Timkat, the celebration of Epiphany. Many travel for days and sometimes weeks (some by foot) to take part in the three-day celebrations.
I was drawn to the amazing architecture of the churches and the spirit and beauty of the people.
