Known as ‘ The Queen of the Red Carpet’, Eku Edewor (or ‘G’ to her close buddies like us at TRUE Africa!) has been holding court on the Nigerian entertainment scene for seven years.
The actress, model, entrepreneur (and now proud mother) was first brought into the limelight and onto our TV screens during her stint on Britain’s Next Top Model. The half-Nigerian half-British beauty has since appeared in films such as Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll as well as When Love Comes Around and was a leading role in Nigerian blockbuster Flower Girl. More upcoming film projects are in the works.
Eku is also known for her impeccable sense of style – she’s always snapped and covered by magazines, bloggers and news for her ever-changing looks, hairstyles and to-die-for accessories.
A lover of fashion herself, she promotes African designers in all arenas whether on the red carpet or when chilling on the beaches of Europe.
Naturally, we wanted to be her plus one for the upcoming Gidi Festival held in Lagos and she very kindly allowed us to tag along!
Eku will be taking over our TRUE Africa Instagram handle for the whole event – she’ll be our ears and eyes on the beach, backstage and, of course, in VIP. Be sure to follow us to check out all she gets up to!
Why are you looking forward to this year’s Gidi Fest?
I think I have been to most of all the previous Gidi Fests – I may have missed just one – so of course I’ll be there again! It is nice to see the brand continuously grow and cater to its audience. It just gets better and better every year. Plus, it’s a fun day out for this Easter weekend.
Which artists are you excited to see?
It’s funny, because I work in the entertainment industry I know most of people performing and attending. I’m looking forward to catching up with them and I am actually quite excited to see Burna Boy, he knows how to give a good performance. Oh and Sauti Sol!
Plus, I’m also looking forward to seeing Lola Rae on the stage. I’ve seen her performances in the UK so her back home will be a treat as she’s a great live performer. Diplo coming to Lagos is a big deal and I’m excited to see him. I’m a Major Lazer fan!
What else must we do when there?
Food is always a big thing for me so I’ll be interested to what the vendors are offering. The last time I went, the year before, it was nice being able to get delicious snacks. I love pop-up food stalls and street style local food. They usually have some great Asun [spicy smoked goat meat. Extremely delish]
You must also check out the beach volleyball and beach soccer competitions. They are such fun things to do and watch. The celebrities always play and get involved in the games.
Any tips to get backstage/VIP access?
Come and find me, say hi and I’ll take you backstage!
Your style is always so on point: top tips for beach festival outfits?
It is a relaxed fashion, so no heels [duh!]. Keep it easy on the hair. A great protective, cool style like braids that keeps your hair off your face is perfect. I’ll be braiding my hair at my fav hair spot Lewa studio!
Light make up is a must so you can chill and enjoy the show without worrying about your face melting. Keep it natural, ladies!
Clothes wise: breezy and flirty tops, shorts, maxi dresses and make sure you have your trusty sunglasses and a hat. It is always super hot!
What will you wearing?
I’m not sure yet but something like Ankara print shorts and a tee, or something colourful with a Moroccan vibe. Lisa Folawiyo has some super cute Ankara high-wasted shorts with frills at the bottom that I am eyeing up.
Gidi Fest dos?
Do bring your SPF.
Do keep hydrated and drink lots of water.
Do come with an open mind ready to enjoy the music.
Do bring lots of friends. You’re gonna have a great time! So don’t take yourself too seriously, this is not a typical Naija party where you can’t say ‘hello’ or go meet new people. Smile, introduce yourself, have fun!
Eku Edewor will be taking over the TRUE Africa instagram account on Saturday 15 April
