Karim Wade, the son of Senegal’s former president Abdoulaye Wade, has been pardoned by the current president Macky Sall, ending his his six-year prison term after three years.

The former banker and past government minister was initially convicted of corruption charges, illegally amassing a fortune of at least USD$200 million. The sentence also came with a $230 million fine.

The next general election in Senegal is in 2019. With growing disquiet amongst the Senegalese population about how much change Sall has brought about, could Karim even run for presidency then? The weather’s great in Qatar for now in any case.
