The fixtures, the players, the goals: welcome to a mega AFCON qualifiers weekend

It’s going to be a massive weekend of African football as the race for qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations reaches its penultimate stage.

Excitement is already being felt by countries who have booked their place at the tournament to be held in Gabon. Morocco rubberstamped their qualification yesterday with a 1-1 draw with Libya, while Tunisia, with their 3-0 win over Djibouti ensured that the fight for top spot in group A will go right down to the wire.

In all, 21 games will be played over this weekend, including the eagerly anticipated game between Gabon and Ivory Coast. This game is treated as a friendly as a result of the new qualification format introduced by CAF in 2015 requiring host countries to take part in the qualification process. It will see a battle of the two titans of African football; Touré and Aubermayang. Will Yaya Touré show Africa why he should have been named African player of the year?

Africa Football Accelerator will be commenting on these games on the True Africa Facebook page. Join in this conversation and tell us what you think about your country’s qualification hopes, or chances of winning the tournament in 2017.
