Nigerian international Victor Anichebe scored his first goal of the season in Sunderland’s first win of the season. They defeated Bournemouth 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium.

The Black Cats had taken just two points from their opening ten games, and had set an unwanted record of recording the worst start to any Premier League season by any team in history.

However, the team from the North East England, managed by former Manchester United manager David Moyes secured a win despite being down to ten men. South Africa’s Steven Pienaar, a player who along with Anichebe, had worked with Moyes at Everton, saw red for two yellow card offences.

Jermain Defoe scored the Sunderland winner from the penalty spot, but it was Anichebe once again who earned the penalty with a strong run into the box.

The powerful Nigerian has been in the news recently for having a twitter howler, when he failed to edit a tweet most likely sent by his social media manager. Sunderland fans will no doubt have forgiven him after his contribution to their team’s first win.
